Epiphany
There is a magic mountain in my mind,
A place of greater power than my own:
A beast of many minds, with hooves of steel,
And heart that I can touch with my own hand.
The mountain screams my name when I'm alone
and lost in thought and wistful daydreaming
That when I'm tired and worn, my body spent,
our minds will touch for just one moment more
to dream of all I hope that we once were...
And then I'll see once more that coal-black crest
below where lies a mystery of life
(hidden 'neath a rock-hard wall of will -
the one thing in this world that I
respect),
where fear and love and trust and faith
are One.

For Major, a 2150 lb. Percheron Draft.
My only. My last.
I wrote "Epiphany" one evening in April of 1998,
during my 34th year in Alsaska. Major was a carriage horse and I was his
driver. It was the first - and the only - time I sat on him, until
I bought him in May of 2000. The experience was so overwhelming that I didn't
dare try to repeat it, until he was mine. Major died on December 21,
2006, at the age of 28, in Yakima, Washington.
