Toby was a dearly beloved teacher and member of our family.  Toby came into our family as a "freebie" and a therapeutic horse for our 11 year old daughter.  Though we only had him for seven months, his death is deeply felt by all who knew him.

He was a very patient horse who understood that my daughter needed extra loving care to help her gain confidence in riding.  Toby taught my son Zach that he loved riding and was actually very good at it.  Toby also taught me that "an old dog" can learn new tricks.

His favorite times during the day were when he was ridden by Zach or Ashleigh and had a large bucket of grain and hay to dive into.  Eating was a favorite pasttime.  "Talking" to those who were bidden to get his grain was also a great joy of his.  He had to make sure that we knew we were keeping him waiting.  One of the most irritating traits of his was him rolling in his new blanket or rainsheet.  No, it couldn't be just rolling in mud, it had to be horse poopy.  He would also stick his tongue out at us.  It got even better when he did this because we would then stick our tongue out at him and it would be a game of "last tongue sticking out".

Toby was there for me when I was having problems in my marriage.  He listened quietly and watched me intently with his beautiful brown loving eyes.  He willingly obeyed me when I was learning how to properly lunge him.  Again, it was Toby who was the teacher.

Toby's first and only show with Ashleigh was a huge success.  Though they did not win anything, it was apprent that Ashleigh was proud to be riding such a beautiful horse and Toby was proud to have such a beautiful girl guiding him.  He also brought me together with my middle school best friend Jennifer C.  Because of Toby I also met another wonderful friend named Kayla K.

Toby, you have taught us so much and we owe you so much.  I know you are safe, happy, and full of grain where you are.  My hope is that we will meet in the future at the Rainbow Bridge.  Until then, go easy on the horse treats, buddy!
