I got Tango as a 2 year old in 1982. I showed him in many horse shows
in Trail Class and my daughter used him in 4-H. He packed elk out of the
mountains. His only vice was that he was a great gate opener. The only gate
he never mastered was barbed wire. But he tried.
There wasn't anything he
wouldn't do and he always tried to make me happy. He proved this in
his final hours with me. He had a bout with colic on January 25 and the vet
came and treated him. I walked him for hours until he was so tired. A call
to the vet assured me I could let him rest for a few minutes each hour. At
3 a.m. on the 26th, it was evident that he was probably suffering a twisted
gut. I made the decision to call the vet back at 7 and have him put down.
During one of the breaks when I came into the house for 2-3 minutes, he went
down. By the time I got back out to him, he was gone...it was so fast and
for that I am thankful. It was almost as if he planned it that way. He didn't
want me to have to make that call nor did he want to go down and thrash around,
which would have forced my husband to put him down. He also didn't go as
I was leading him around. He waited till my back was turned and bowed out
gracefully.
Thank you, Tango. There will never be another horse like you on Lone Spring
Ranch. You were one of a kind.
