Stormy took possession of
my heart the moment she was born. She was very small, but we had expected
that as her Mom was on a special diet and medication for her founder that
she developed in her sixth month of pregnancy. Even though she was small,
her heart and spirit were enormous and she thrived.
From day one, I worked with
her and thought she was the smartest filly in the world. This being my first
foal, I did not realize that most foals were the same if worked daily, but
a Mom can brag! She seemed to know her horse Mom could not run and play like
others, so she was very gentle around her Mom. I bought a companion for her
and she really let him have it. I knew her Mom would eventually have to be
put down, but I did not know it was going to be when Stormy was 4 months
old. She grew up in a hurry after her Mom was put down and we got to some
serious work.
One day after a training
session, I released her in the pasture about the same time our goat started
bleating. She was running over to see what all the noise was about and hit
a muddy spot and went down. My sons and I had to pick her up and she hopped
to the barn on three legs. The vet came out later that day and said he thought
she just pulled something, to keep her on stall rest and give meds as ordered.
We did this for several weeks. We finally realized that there was more damage
than could be fixed. And two weeks shy of her first birthday, Stormy was
laid to rest next to her mother in a shady grove behind our barn.
This spring I had a strange
plant come up on her gravesite. After research at our state university, I
found that the plant is a rare exotic wild plant. I believe this is God's
way of telling me that my Stormy was a rare, one-of-a-kind horse and special
in His Eyes.
I know that Stormy and her
mom, Maggie, are running side by side in green pastures over the Rainbow Bridge.
This is something they could not do on earth and they will run to greet me
when I crossed over.
