On May 14, 2013, we had to say goodbye.
He will be missed always.

32 years! Old Boy. Together we covered a lot of miles. You came into our Family for my 11th Birthday. I will never forget the way he would nuzzle on my shoulder, nibble at my shirt pocket to get out pieces of carrot and purposely pull off his saddle blanket with his teeth before I had a chance to put the saddle on.
Both green, He and I learned the physicalitys of horse and owner handling but what truly took place was a relationship and understanding of one another that is irreplaceable. Not only with me but also with my family.
A character! If the flies were annoying him during a ride he would put his nose under my foot and push up till I broke off a branch from the nearest tree and swished it like windscreen wipers on a car to swish them away. Shoeing time was always funny. My Father would complain that Spotty was leaning on him while he was nailing on the shoe, you would look at him and he would be dozing off enjoying the attention.
Whilst his preference was to quietly stroll along enjoying the scenery we did enjoy a gallop through bush tracks and Barrel racing at Pony Club. He loved rounding up cattle and over the years was 1st pony to other members of my family. So gentle and quiet with all children and fiercely protective of those he loved. When on occasions we were confronted with a snake or barking dog he would attack front on. Numerous times when I found myself flung off on my butt, always accidental, never by malice, Spotty would bow his head and stand by my side till I was able to get back on.
Those years were so precious and we both grew older. I introduced him to my 3 children and he bonded with them as he and I did. My Father and him had a mateship that was very special.
Sadly, like us all, in ageing his body began to wear out but defiantly not his Spirit. As he put his head in my arms I knew he was telling me he was tired and it was his time to leave. We will never forget him.
