My Star, My Champion,
My Friend

My name is Katie and I lost
a big, beautiful friend of 27 years last week to a severe case of colic.
He was a beautiful, intelligent, sensitive, talented, obnoxious 1/2 Arabian.
We came together 27 years ago. I was 10, he was 6 months. We grew up together.
He was never my baby, but my friend. He was a young girl's dream, a young
woman's constant companion, my friend.
He followed me everywhere.
When my family moved, off to college, to Indiana for the career days, and
finally here to Peru. He helped me through so many difficult times...my parent's
divorce, boyfriends, break-ups with boyfriends, difficult job situations,
the loss of my daughter Karlee Rose. He never judged me, always accepted
me no matter my hairstyle or mood. He was there for the joys too. He carried
me to victory at the State 4-H competition and Open shows. He carried me
on 8 hour trail rides and lazy days in the woods.
He was very beautiful and
very talented. As a young horse, he attracted girls like a rock star. He
excelled in: escaping any enclosure, Western pleasure, English pleasure,
dressage, jumping, annoying the coach when he was a school horse and on and
on.
This past year we have struggled
to keep weight on him. I'm not sure what happened that evening. But I recognized
the colic. We spent the night with him in the barn, walking, giving Bantamine,
resting, warming, cooling. But the last dose of Banamine was too much and
he died minutes later in my arms. My star, my champion, my friend.
