April 16, 1984 to May 21, 2002

With deep sorrow, I had my dear friend, Skip, euthanized Tuesday morning, May 21, 2002. He colicked badly during the night and when I found him in the morning, it was too late to save him. He was 18, but he had always been a very healthy horse. I had ridden him on Monday and he was fine. He seemed fine when he came in Monday night and ate his dinner. So it was a great shock to find him in such great distress Tuesday morning. He died peacefully in my arms, and is buried under his favorite apple tree.

He came to me off of the track 10 years ago, and I feel privileged and honored to have been chosen to be his special friend. His presence in my life has been life-changing in many ways. He was a master teacher and great spirit, who expanded my horizons exponentially. He led me down many paths I never would have gone down otherwise: natural horsemanship, clicker training, homeopathics and animal communication, to name a few. He gave me the crash course in true horsemanship and showed me the depth of intelligence and spirit of the inner horse. He led me to meet many wonderful people.

He overcame many things in his life, which included much trauma in his racetrack career. Helping him to transform from a terrified, angry, aggressive horse into a sweet, calm, happy, loving horse has been my proudest life accomplishment.

And he is teaching me still, about death and dealing with great loss. I know that he is fine now, running free with his old friends, Duncan and Fury. He is with me still in spirit and is helping me to get through this. He found great peace, happiness and love here, from both equines and humans.

I will love him always.

Mary
