Samantha

Chestnut Tennessee Walker mare

1991 - 2014

Samantha was rescued at a horse auction where she was found to be blind in both eyes.  I adopted her from the horse rescue.

Samantha was an extremely sweet and gentle horse.  A few times she bumped into me and immediately acted like she was sorry. Almost 9 years I cared for her in her blindness.  She showed kindness to all people, trusting they would not hurt her.  She knew that people would be the source of her welfare.  Run your hand down her front and rear legs and she would lift that hoof every time.

The other side of Samantha was her fear of noises, especially gunfire and fireworks.  The last couple years I really had concerns about keeping her safe from running through the fence.  A neighbor started to shoot a pistol about every week and sometimes 2 and 3 times a week.  I had to be ready with halter and lead. Then comes the fireworks on New Years and July the 4th.

Along with the noise problem both of her eyes were getting worse. Festering, reoccurring infections, and cancer. One cancer removed and another starting.

I dreaded that day I would have to let her go.  After the veterinarian put her to sleep I asked him if I made the right decision.  He said, "Ira, you surley made the right decision.".

I believe someday in the future she will "see" me with perfect eyes.  I believe also that my other horse Smokey will be standing alongside her, waiting for me.
