My first memory of being connected to you was the first time I saw you, running like mad, a small wild Arabian with your tail waving in the wind. I hung my 8 year old head over the white board fence and my mother said to me, "He is ours now, his name is Royal.". I had never seen anything so pretty, so strong, so delicate. I was in awe.

Above is a photo from that day, as I was touching you for the very first time, my mother proudly holding the end of the lead. I remember closing my eyes, thinking you were the softest thing I had ever felt. You were just 23 months old then.

My mother was the reason I rode horses before I could walk, and she had been looking for the perfect horse for a very long time. Royal was a spicy one and a half year old and what most called "crazy hot", but that made us love him more. He had the personality of a wild spirit and the heart of a king.

He was not easy to train, nor to ride, but he embellished all the characteristics of his own unique sensitive and beautiful self, and we couldn't get enough of him. I called him my little brother and treated him as such.

Royal became my mother's absolute pride and joy, but beyond anything, he was her best friend in all the world. Their relationship was a great lesson to me as I would watch her shower him with more love than one could fathom. He flourished in it, seemed to become more beautiful in it. As a child I learned to ride on Royal, and still to this day can remember galloping across a field so fast that my eyes watered and all I could do was hold on to that long beautiful mane of his. He was a challenge, but always took care of his rider...of his family.

I grew up with Royal and when I was blessed with Pepper for my very own, the two spent close to 20 years together and never let each other out of their sight. Pepper missed Royal so, so terribly the last few years of his life.

Royal was a very special member of our family until he was 29. Losing him was incredibly difficult for me, but just devastated my mother, as he was her beautiful child and meant the world to her.

I asked my mother if she could ever have another horse and her only response was, "Royal was the only horse for me.". He was her 'once in a lifetime horse', and I guess she always knew it.

Our family misses you so much, Royal, but I know that you are with Pepper, watching over us until we are all together once again.

We love you so dearly,
Missy
