Romany, my
beautiful dark bay mare,
With a single white sock, and faint starry blaze,
Such a pretty face, kind eyes and a loving soul.
Admired by all who chanced upon you
And my soulmate these past two years.
So powerful, yet so vunerable.
Together Forever.
Romany was a beautiful dark
bay mare. She worked hard at weekends as a favourite riding school horse
and lived out all year round being rugged up and growing a thick winter coat.
She was brilliant over the small cross-country course at the stables and
I was fortunate to be able to buy her when the riding school
closed.
She became the cornerstone
of my life as I looked after her and took her to local shows, cross-country
events and on long distance rides. It's late September and I recall the pleasure
of Ro walking through deep crunchy leaves around the edge of a local park.
We also entered the Forest cross-country competition as a pair with Janice
riding Monty and to our surprise came first with the fastest time.
Ro moved to a new yard and
was stabled at night during the winter months and seemed to accept the extra
comfort, eagerly awaiting her breakfast in the morning. We saw Christmas
through together and early January. Then one Sunday morning she didn't want
her food and kicked it away, telling me she wasn't well. It looked like colic
and the vet came twice that day as Ro deteriorated. The vet offered to carry
out surgery, but later that night I got a call to say that Ro couldn't be
saved from a rupture that had occurred in her intestine.
My world
fell apart and a very good friend sent me this text: Romany is at peace
with her other friends. She has no more pain and is with you always. She
wants you to be happy and well and offer your kindness to the horse world
on her behalf.
I couldn't cope without
Ro and hoped that looking after another horse would help me. This is how
a chestnut mare called Summer Shades came to me. We rode out together and
began to understand each other during the summer months and she built up
muscle and tone very well. As we reach Christmas and a New Year, I'm struggling
very much with the loss of Ro and hope that this subsides as there are so
many memories of good times with Ro and a bond to develop with Summer.
