Partner

I lost my wonderful trail horse, Partner, on December 30, 2009. He was born April 4, 1981, and he died of a heart attack - he was playing with his pasture mates and a moment later, his heart stopped beating.

I am the author of a number of published trail books, and Partner was part of every word I've written in my books. I felt compelled to write a short poem as a tribute to him, and I'm also including a photo of him from my last day with him on Sunday, December 27th when I visited him at his retirement ranch home.

Thank you for helping me share my love and respect for this fantastic horse - so appropriately nicknamed Partner and sired by wonderful great grandparents - Bold Ruler (Secretariat) and King - P234 - he was a beautiful, athletic, and intelligent Appendix AQHA horse. Here is the photo and my tribute to Partner:

A Tribute to Our Great Horse, Partner

His name was Great Believer, but he was Partner to us all
He was the world’s best trail horse, even if he was a bit too tall

I knew he loved my sister Hanna and Larry Snead more than me
But he tolerated my kisses anyway and was the best that he could be

He was an athlete through and through, always using his great strength
To guide me over miles and miles of trails, no matter what the length.

He trotted and chased his many ranch mates daily, enjoying his fun retirement life
But today his big heart suddenly stopped, without any physical pain or strife.

Partner’s smartness and blood bay beauty bred from his very famous kin
Will forever be his legacy to me and all who loved him - as his hereafter begins.

And we will miss him so…..

Jan Hancock

Thank you for helping me share my love and respect for this fabulous horse that has been a part of my life and career for 18 years - he was truly one of those Special Ones.
