The day was like any other day
do the small things around the house
get dressed to go outside
feed the horses first then clean the poop
the time will fly by
before you have to go to work
when you get to the barn
something is not right
you feel it all around you
the eyes tell it all
you are missing some eyes
you look in the back there he is
lying on the ground
you call to him
he rolls his head
looks back at you
you know he is sick
you run to him
and you know
his eyes tell it all
he has been down all night
you get him up go to the barn
all the signs are there
but you make the call
on the ride to the vets
hoping you are wrong
please be wrong
at the vets waiting at the door
are the interns and vets
waiting for you to unload him
you get him off they start working
then the answer comes
surgery or nothing
his age is against him
it comes back on you
what do you want to do
you know what pain he will have
you know what you have to do
Old friend the time has come
we must say goodbye
I will take you home
that is where you belong
you have a special place to be
always close to me at home
I made a promise to you years ago
that you would never be with another
you gave me many good years
O the many miles of things we’ve seen
I will miss talking to you and those big eyes
and your big heart
others know you and loved you
you will be missed by many.
