AQHA Palomino mare

April 18, 1999 - June 2006

I lost this young mare to West Nile last summer. I had to personally put her down due to the stress it was causing her baby. My husband was not around, and the vet could not make it for about four hours. That was the hardest thing I have had to do in my life.

The best way I could deal with the situation was this poem below. We miss your little nicker, Hollywood!

Path of the Pasture

Beaten down and curved
with no specific destination.
Where mares have wandered
and colts have played.
Is where I walk with a sense
of anticipation.

This same path where you have trod
is where you lay now.
The sunlight bathes you
in a crisp morning dew.
You call out as if to say
please God take this away.

As I approach, your breathing quickens
those dark brown eyes watch my every move.
I sit there quietly stroking your face
and together we look down that path.

The dusty trail that led you to water,
shelter, and grain.
That same well worn path
you taught your foal to follow.
Is what we look at now.

I hold you silently until your quiet,
and the light has left your eyes.
I gather my heavy heart, and walk alone
down that empty path of the pasture.
