One More For The Gipper

Sorrel Quarter Horse

1978 - June 19, 2007

I'm crouched here beside you, stroking your face as you breathe your last breath, and I can feel your hoofbeats thundering in my heart as you go. I didn't want you to have suffered, and I know in my heart that I made the right decision, but I miss you already.

I miss the way you neatly stacked your corn cobs at the end of your trough, and I miss the way you would nicker at me when you'd see me. I miss the way you'd rub your head on my chest and sniff my pockets for treats. I miss the way you would lower your head and peer at me with your soft eyes through the crack between the barn doors, and I miss the way you would tug on my hoodie strings and shoe strings so that I would give you treats. I miss all the ways you would tug on my heart strings, and most of all, I miss you.

Many times you were my hero, Gipper, and I hope that today I was yours. I love you so much that I had to let you go.

How do you say goodbye to such a good friend????? The answer is: you don't.

See you later, buddy.

Love you always,
Melanie
