Duke

Sandy's Big Mack

American Paint Horse

May 7, 1995 - September 24, 2007

We found and bought Duke in July 2006. He was for our 10 year-old daughter. Never have I ever seen a horse as gentle and loving as Duke.

He was amazing. The first times I rode him, there was this incredible connection that formed almost immediately. There were times when we rode, I didn't even have to give him a command. He knew what I wanted and when. The last time I rode him was late spring of 2007. The winter here in Tennessee went from cold to scorching hot. With no rain, and temperatures reaching over 100, there was no way riding was even thinkable.

Then on September 23, 2007, I received a call that something was wrong with Duke. I reached the farm, and he was staggering a bit, kind of like someone that was drunk. On Monday, September 24, the vet came out and looked at him. He said that he thought Duke had encephalitis. He, at the most, had 3 days left. He took several vials of blood, which we are still waiting results on. That evening at 5:45 p.m., after coming to the conclusion he needed to be put down, Duke died on his own.

My heart has been broken and I don't think I have ever done something as hard as watching my beloved Duke die. He was one in a million.
