Comet

Died September 7, 2014

Comet was a rescue pony. He had lived his life in a paddock, no rugs, and no care. He got a biscuit of hay every few days. He wore a halter 24/7, which created a bald spot on his nose which you can see in the picture above.

When my family rescued him, he lived with Buttercup, my first pony. They became deeply attached with each other and they freaked out if they couldn't see each other.

Comet was a sweet, cheeky little thing. He got so excited when he saw us in the morning and greeted us whenever we came out with a deep, hoarse whinny.

When Buttercup became sick with impaction colic, it was quite clear he wasn't going to make it. We had to make the hardest decision about Comet. Because he was so attached to Butter, it would be cruel to leave him alone. He probably would've broken his leg by running frantically around the paddock looking for Buttercup and died in agony the night that Butter died. So Comet was put down with Butter, peacefully and dignified. He went to sleep with a mouthful of fresh, juicy grass.

Goodbye, Comet. You left your hoof prints on my heart, and I know we rescued you, but sometimes I think you rescued us.
