Clue

Clue, also affectionately known as, "Glue Bucket", was the first horse I had ever been involved in breaking and training. Thank you, Cathy and Roger, you were great teachers!

Regretfully, I had to put Clue down the morning of February 5, 2007, due to a broken leg. I don't know how it happened, but I will never forget the courage and spirit Clue showed when he managed to make it to the barn that Sunday evening. I miss him tremendously.

Clue

Clue was a horse with a very long neck,
and one white hock, a stripe and a snip.
Did I mention he had a square bottom lip?

His eyes were soft brown,
his ears well defined.
"Man!" I thought to myself, "What a find!!!"

From the moment I saw him
he stayed on my mind and I bargained and pleaded,
"Roger.  Please make him mine."

An agreement was made
and that was the start...
A bonding of spirit and love
in my heart.

We started out slowly
with a brush and a comb.
To help my young horse
feel comfy at home.

A halter and lead
and new saddle were bought.
"Ohhhh, can I really do this?"
I thought.

Every day was new and exciting back then...
back when this marvelous friendship began.

The smell of that barn remains fresh in mind
I still smell the sawdust during that time.
A lunge line, a whip, a walk, then a canter,
a blanket, a saddle, a bit
"Now Clue...what's the matter?"

Over bridges, around barrels, through poles we must weave.
"Buddy, I know it's a lot to conceive!
Hold steady my friend, I won't lead you wrong.
Outside there's a beautiful world to be found!"

East Fork and South Fork and Lands between the Lakes.
These are the places that you and I will take!
Through valleys and hills, small lakes and big creeks
and many more places like that, so to speak.

We've gone many places in the few years we've had.
There are many pictures and memories...I'm glad.
Though I know that you suffer no more, my dear friend.
I was not ready to come to trail's end.

Someday...down the road, this broken heart of mine will mend.
Yet I know you'll be in my thoughts way beyond then.

Written from my heart,

Holly
