My beloved horse, Bear, died
from colic this week. He was a great horse in so many ways, a perfect partner
for me. We were partners for over 10 years and he taught me so much. Bear
was very kind and playful, searching my clothes for mints.
He was a big horse, a clyde
thoroughbred cross and always looked so dignified in the show ring. He knew
his job and together we accomplished so much.
Bear was very special
in how he took care of me. I am visually impaired and he always seemed to
know that he had an extra responsibility to look out for both of
us.
In 2000, Bear had
a serious suspensory tear and I looked after him, slowly bringing him back
to health. It took four years and I was so proud when we made it back to
the dressage ring last summer.
We were having a
great summer and I was thinking of retiring him as he was 23. I was hoping
he would spend the rest of his life enjoying pasture and some
hacking.
I am devastated by
his loss. He was my best friend.
