I have the amazing blessing of having been chosen by my beautiful best friend Aziza to share with me many of the best moments of my life and some of the saddest. When I met my horse in the fall of 1992 I was heading out to purchase a bay Arabian gelding. Instead I was enamored with a gray Arabian mare who greeted me. My life has been forever changed by this encounter. I love Aziza then and now and will always miss her but cherish our many fabulous memories.
Aziza was super sweet, amazingly diverse and smart and totally adorable (although I'm biased). My stepdaughter Dawn belonged to an equestrian drill team in Colorado (Westernaires) and when she retired her horse Midnight she rode Aziza for her remaining years before graduating high school. Aziza and Dawn went through the mid range teams all the way to the top teams including Red Team, Red Dressage and Red Liberty. We all had some amazing experiences and performances. During and when Westernaires ended we did some dressage and other training, trail rides and small gymkana events.
Early spring of 2012 my beautiful friend became very ill with peculiar symptoms. By the time the vet and I figured out that she had EPM, a terrible neurological disease, she had suffered a great deal of nerve damage. After the treatments she never truly recovered although we gave it a heartfelt effort.
It became my greatest joys most days to just spend a lot of time with her and walk her down the road to graze or to clean her up and groom her. I miss her smell and touch so much! It broke my heart when she was no longer able to get up even with my help. I will always love her and pray she'll meet me at the Rainbow Bridge.
I have my good days and some not so good but I cry for my friend almost every day. It's been difficult to properly honor her memory through the round of tears. The times we had together seem like they were fleeting even though there were many years. I am so lucky and blessed to have my life touched by such an amazing soul.
