I had Apple since she was just a twinkle in her mama's eye. I remember when we found out her mama was pregnant and we couldn't wait for Apple to be born. She was a saucy girl, the spirit of my heart. Having raised her, she and I were especially close. When I arrived at the barn, even though she didn't see or hear me, she always let out a whinney that everybody could hear. People would say they couldn't believe she knew I was there. It made me feel so, so special.
Apple is the reason my husband John has a connection with horses and supports me unconditionally with having them in our lives. One day, when Apple was about a year old, John and I were out in the pasture with Apple and Ellie, her sister. I was running around with them, which they loved to do. Apple went over to John and communicated to him, "Come run with us." He couldn't believe it. He hollered out to me, "Pam, she just told me to come and run with her." Later that day, he told me he now understood why these beautiful horses meant so much to me. From that day forward, Apple was his horse and he was proud to tell everybody that.
Apple was so devoted to me and had such courage. We were out on a trail one day, walking side by side, when a huge dog came out of nowhere and tried to attack me. Apple put her body between me and the dog and started kicking and stayed there until the dog finally retreated. She never left my side, even when the dog tried to attack a second time. All of the time this was happening, she was on a loose lead rope, which at one point I wasn't even holding onto.
She is terribly missed by her sister, Ellie May, and her heart sister, Cupid. She is also missed by the rest of her human family, John, Ryan, and Sarah. But we all know that she is in Heaven waiting for us to reunite again. As Ellie communicated to me in the only way a horse can, "Mom, it was her time to go."
Apple Sauce, you left your hoofprint on my heart. I feel you with me always and look forward to seeing you in Heaven.
