Amber was my first pony
and therefore my first horse love. He was a stubborn horse, but he was honestly
bombproof. He was always overweight no mater how hard I tried to make him
trim down. I learned to ride Amber bareback as the saddle would always
end up underneath his tummy. He had big plate-like feet and was only shod
once in his time with me.
I got him when I was 10 and he was already elderly at 27. He stood on my
foot so many times I lost count. He was the best pony a kid could have to
learned to ride on. We had years of great fun and memories.
Sadly, I outgrew Amber when I turned 16 and graduated to riding Bobby.
But I made a promise to Amber as a child that I would never sell him, so
I kept my word. Sadly, in 1994, I lost my grazing and was faced with having
to run my old friend in a large mob on sandy country. By then he had very
little teeth left and was very slow and beginning to loose weight. I had
to make a decision that I regret to this day. I had to put my old friend
down. I felt it was kinder than starving and being bullied constantly by
other horses. I had nowhere else to put him and I owed him peace if nothing
else.
Amber was 39 years old. "I am sorry my old friend, I wish there had been
another way, please forgive me". Forever your Mom, Angela. I hope you
and Bobby are back grazing together on the other side.
