After a long awaited
pregnancy, and months of monitoring her on internet barn cams, Carla, a miniature
mare, gave birth to a very small colt on June 3, 2004. His birth was difficult
and his outlook was grim, but from the beginning he was a fighter.
His owners took him to a large animal hospital and he flourished. For 10
days he overcame every obstacle that was put in his path. He progressed to
the point where he could come home, but human negligence stepped in. Someone at the hospital neglected to heed the direction of his owners,
and placed him in a stall with shavings. That same day he started having
problems breathing and when the hospital staff took an x-ray, they found
that his trachea and nostrils were full of shavings. He died this
morning.
Human error is understandable, as we all are prone to err, but negligence
is unexcuseable. This small colt fought challenges that adult horses would
have failed. He almost made it. We pray that he is running free and happily
now.
